Local Keys Privacy Policy
Effective October 21, 2026
Local Keys is made by Backcountry Blueprints LLC ("we"). We built it so that your voice and your words are processed on your iPhone. We don't run any servers that receive what you say or type, we have no accounts, and we don't use analytics, advertising, or tracking tools. This policy explains exactly what the App does, including the few times it uses the internet.
What is processed on your iPhone
- Your voice. Speech is turned into text on your iPhone. Audio is held in memory while you dictate and discarded afterwards, unless you turn on "Keep Recent Recordings" (below).
- What you type and dictate. The keyboard is built without any networking code. It sends what you type to the app you're typing in, as every keyboard does, and nowhere else.
- Settings, the weekly free-word count, and your words are stored on your iPhone.
What the keyboard sees and keeps
- iOS doesn't show third-party keyboards in password fields — it switches to Apple's own keyboard there — so Local Keys doesn't see passwords typed into them.
- The keyboard does not keep a record of your keystrokes. Learning is off unless you turn on "Learn My Words" (offered during setup, and in Settings › Privacy & Your Data). Only when it's on, the keyboard keeps:
- words you use that aren't in its dictionary, so autocorrect stops changing them;
- corrections you make to your own dictations (for example "trol hagin" → "Trollhagen"), so it spells those words right next time.
- Words you add yourself in Settings › My Words are kept whether or not Learn My Words is on.
- It learns nothing in fields marked for usernames, email addresses, passwords, one-time codes, phone numbers, card numbers or web addresses, nothing containing digits or symbols, and nothing where the app you're in has turned autocorrect off.
- All of this stays on your iPhone. See and delete it in Settings › My Words and Settings › Privacy & Your Data, or by deleting the App.
When the App uses the internet
- Downloading a speech model. When you choose a model, the App downloads it from Hugging Face (huggingface.co). Like any website, Hugging Face receives your device's IP address and basic request details; the download doesn't include anything you've said or typed. Apple's speech model is downloaded and updated by iOS under Apple's privacy policy.
- Purchases. Buying, restoring, and refunds go through Apple. We receive no payment details, name, or email; Apple tells the App only whether your Apple Account owns Local Keys Pro.
- Help and feedback. "Send Feedback", "Help & Support", and "Report a Problem" open a web form in Safari. Nothing is sent unless you choose to submit it, and then we receive only what you enter. A problem report contains technical details you can read before sending (device model, iOS and app version, memory and speed measurements, recent app events). It doesn't include your dictations or anything you typed.
Crash reports from Apple
If you've turned on Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements › Share With App Developers, Apple may share crash and performance reports about the App with us. These are provided by Apple and don't identify you to us.
Clipboard and recent dictations
- "Copy Each Dictation to the Clipboard" (on by default; turn it off in Settings › Style & Mic) puts your latest dictation on this iPhone's clipboard only — not shared to your other devices — and it clears itself after 5 minutes. Other apps can read the clipboard while it's there; iOS shows a notice when an app pastes from it.
- The last 10 dictations' text is kept on your iPhone so you can type one again from the keyboard. Turn off "Keep Text for the Keyboard's Recent List" in Settings › Privacy & Your Data to clear it and stop keeping it.
- Picking a dictation from the keyboard's Recent list types it and also puts it on this iPhone's clipboard the same way (local only, clears after 5 minutes).
Optional features (off by default)
- Keep Recent Recordings saves your last 10 dictations, audio and text, on this iPhone so you can replay misheard ones. Delete them any time.
- Use Contact Names in Autocorrect reads names and Text Replacements that iOS shares with keyboards, on this iPhone only, so autocorrect leaves them alone.
- Smart Cleanup passes your finished dictation to Apple's on-device language model (Apple Intelligence) to fix obvious mistakes. It runs on your iPhone.
What we don't do
- We don't sell or share personal information, and we don't use your voice or text to train any model.
- We don't have accounts, so there is no profile about you on our side to view or delete. Everything the App stores is on your iPhone, under your control.
Your choices
Delete individual items in Settings, use "Delete All" / "Forget Words the Keyboard Learned", or delete the App to remove everything it stored. iPhone backups you make (iCloud or computer) may include the App's data, under your own Apple Account.
Children
The App isn't directed to children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
If something changes
We describe how the App is designed to work as accurately as we can. If we find that it works differently than described — for example a bug that stores or sends something it shouldn't — we will fix it promptly and update this policy. If we change this policy, we'll update the effective date above and the copy in the App.
